Why Cloth Diaper?

I never imagined I would be a cloth diapering mom.  Poop in my washing machine?  No thank you!  But after a couple months of daily blowouts, I’d had enough!  After trying every brand of disposables out there (literally, EVERY brand), all with the exact same result (poop everywhere and ruined outfits), I decided to CD, since everything I looked at said blowouts are an incredibly rare occurrence in cloth.  This is true – since my little one has been in cloth full time, we’ve had no blowouts!  Which means no ruined clothes, and that makes me a very happy mom.

Beyond this, there are tons of other reasons to cloth diaper!

Cloth diapers save money.  Let’s face it – disposables are expensive.  When you’re going through roughly 3,000 a year, it adds up.  Say you spend 36 cents per diaper  -  that’s over $1,000 a year!  Depending on which CD system you choose, you could diaper a child from birth to potty learning  for anywhere from $100-$500.  If you use the same diapers for subsequent children, your cost will be even less.  Because the cost of disposables and CD systems vary, there’s no exact science to figure out just how much you’ll save, but there’s no question – cloth diapers will save you money!  And who doesn’t like to save money?!

Cloth diapers are better for the environment.   One disposable diaper can take between 250 and 500 years to decompose in a landfill.  This means that EVERY disposable diaper used, since the time they were created, is sitting in a landfill somewhere.  That’s a lot of diapers taking up a lot of space!  Some will argue that cloth diapers negatively affect the environment due to the amount of water needed to wash them.  Personally, I only do an extra three loads of laundry a week, and I’m not constantly driving to the store to buy sposies, throwing away the plastic packaging, or throwing away the diaper.  Plus, I feel good knowing my cloth dipes can be used for another baby one day!

Cloth diapers are EASY.  Like, super easy.  I’m fairly lazy when it comes to my household duties, so if they were difficult, I wouldn’t be nearly as obsessed with cloth as I am.  You can put one on in the same amount of time as you can a disposable.  These are not the dipes you close with safety pins from when I was a baby, these are simple!

Cloth diapers are gentle on your baby’s skin.  Disposable diapers contain chemicals.  Yes, the thing that is closest to your baby’s sensitive  skin contains chemicals!  Depending what brand you use, sposies can contain dioxin, sodium polyacrylate, fragrances, dyes, plastics, and other toxins.  This means quite a bit of chemical exposure for your little one.  With cloth, you don’t have to worry about this!  Plus, cloth diapers are super soft and fluffy, not stiff like sposies.

Cloth diapers are adorable.  There are SO many cute prints and colors out there!  Do you like owls?  There’s a diaper for that.  Dinosaurs?  Yep, there’s a diaper for that.  Chevron?  You guessed it – there’s a dipe for that!  Cloth diapers are so cute you may not want to cover them with clothing.  All you need is a t-shirt and a pair of leg warmers, so dressing your baby is a breeze!

And last, I’ll leave you with a friendly warning.  Cloth diapers can be addicting!  Maybe I shouldn’t tell you that, but we’re all friends here.  New prints, new colors, new styles – you might want them all!  Thankfully, you can resell or use them for future children!
